Course: ARTS-1301- Section: 02
|Description||A general introduction to the visual arts designed to create an appreciation of the vocabulary, media, techniques, and purposes of the creative process. Students will critically interpret and evaluate works of art (painting, sculpture, architecture) within formal, cultural, and historical contexts.|
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Apply art terminology as it specifically relates to works of art. (PSLO Alpha and 2; measured by vocabulary quizzes)
Demonstrate knowledge of art elements and principles of design.(PSLO 1 and 2; measured in presentations and embedded test questions)
Differentiate between the processes and materials used in the production of various works of art.(PSLO 1 and 2; measured in class presentations and discussions)
Critically interpret and evaluate works of art.(PSLO 1,2,5; measured by essay on critical thinking)
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of arts on culture.(PSLO 1,2, 4,5; measured by presentations and discussions)
* Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.
* Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

PSLO 4: Teamwork Skills- Shows the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal.
Helps the team move forward by discussing merits of alternative ideas; Treats team members respectfully; uses positive facial, vocal or written tone, or language to convey a positive attitude; Motivates teammates by expressing confidence about the importance of the task; Provides assistance/encouragement to team members; Completes all assigned tasks by deadline; Addresses conflict constructively; or helps the group avoid conflict completely.
PSLO 5: Social Responsibility Skills - Expresses intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Identifies cultural characteristics (including beliefs, values, perspectives and/or practices); demonstrates knowledge of civic responsibility; provides evidence of experience in civic- engagement activities; and describes what she/ he has learned as it relates to a reinforced and clarified sense of civic identity in local, regional, national, or global communities; and shows awareness of one?s own culture in relation to others.

Week 5: Exploring different Medias (Chapter 6-9) Group discussion and research project.
Week 6: Sculpture (Chapter 11) Student Collage exhibit

Week 8: The Ancient Mediterranean World (Chapter 14) Lecture and Discussion understanding art and its cultural characteristics in different cultures of the Ancient World.
Week 9: Christianity (Chapter 15) Lecture and Discussion how ideas influence the creative process.
Week 10: Renaissance (Chapter 16) Lecture and Discussion on the effect of the past on a new historic time period.
Week 11: Baroque (Chapter 17) Lecture and discussion: Art as a means of power and influence
Week 12: Modern World (Chapter 21-23) Lecture and analysis of artists, individual style giving rise to a multitude of art movements.
Week 13: Discussion of the importance of a sense of civic identity in local, regional, national, or global communities; and show awareness of one's own culture in relation to others.

The professor of this course reserves the right to change this syllabus at any time.
Attendance is mandatory.
Two free absences for emergencies. For each additional absence 20 points will be deducted from the final grade.
Two free instances of being tardy. 5 points will be deducted from final grade for each additional tardy.
Extensive absences need to be sanctioned by the vice president.
