|Description||A general introduction to the visual arts designed to create an appreciation of the vocabulary, media, techniques, and purposes of the creative process. Students will critically interpret and evaluate works of art (painting, sculpture, architecture) within formal, cultural, and historical contexts.|
Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Apply art terminology as it specifically relates to works of art. (PSLO Alpha and 2; measured by vocabulary quizzes)
Demonstrate knowledge of art elements and principles of design.(PSLO 1 and 2; measured in presentations and embedded test questions)
Differentiate between the processes and materials used in the production of various works of art.(PSLO 1 and 2; measured in class presentations and discussions)
Critically interpret and evaluate works of art.(PSLO 1,2,5; measured by essay on critical thinking)
Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of arts on culture.(PSLO 1,2, 4,5; measured by presentations and discussions)
The student will be able to:
1. Understand and value the importance of art in life (PSLO Alpha, 1, 2, 5, 6) Measured by pretest/post-test, embedded test and quiz questions, group discussions, and/or oral & visual presentation rubrics
2. Acquire a basic knowledge of works of aft (PSLO Alpha,5) Measured by pretest/post-test, embedded test or quiz questions
3. Respond critically to art (PSLO 1, 2) Measured by essay rubric, embedded test or quiz questions; group discussion
4. Understand the creative process (PSLO Alpha, 1) Measured by pretest/post-test, embedded test and quiz questions, group discussions, and/or oral & visual presentation rubrics

PSLO ALPHA: Reading skills - Demonstrates comprehension of content-area reading material.
Identifies all main ideas, supporting details, and vocabulary in reading material; demonstrates a full understanding of the reading.
PSLO 1: Critical Thinking Skills ï¿½ Uses creative thinking, innovation, inquiry and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information.

PSLO 2: Communication Skills ï¿½ Demonstrates effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and/or visual communication.
Expresses a strong thesis; organizes information with effective transitions & sequencing of ideas; uses substantial, logical & specific development of ideas; details are relevant, original, credible and correctly documented when appropriate to show an effective development and interpretation of ideas; and presents ideas in appropriate mode of expression for the task.
PSLO 4: Teamwork Skills- Shows the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal.
Helps the team move forward by discussing merits of alternative ideas; Treats team members respectfully; uses positive facial, vocal or written tone, or language to convey a positive attitude; Motivates teammates by expressing confidence about the importance of the task; Provides assistance/encouragement to team members; Completes all assigned tasks by deadline; Addresses conflict constructively; or helps the group avoid conflict completely.
PSLO 5: Social Responsibility Skills - Expresses intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Identifies cultural characteristics (including beliefs, values, perspectives and/or practices); demonstrates knowledge of civic responsibility; provides evidence of experience in civic- engagement activities; and describes what she/ he has learned as it relates to a reinforced and clarified sense of civic identity in local, regional, national, or global communities; and shows awareness of oneï¿½s own culture in relation to others.

The test open at 8am on Thursday and end at 11:59pm on Saturday. They cannot be reset
The Test and Quotes/Critiques end at 11:59pm and will submit at that time whether you are finished or not.

|Instructor Policies||My office is open on Monday - Friday - 8:30 - 10:45am. Please set up an appointment before you come. If you need to discuss grades or assignments please set up an appointment. I will not discuss grades over the phone or email. Please contact me through email if you have any questions.|
|Attendance Policy||Assignments are due on time and unless a major emergency I will not reset them. IF they are reset for any other reason I will deduct 5 points for each time from your Attendance Grade.|
