Course Information
Description Application of communication theory and practice to the public speaking context, with emphasis on audience analysis, speaker delivery, ethics of communication, cultural diversity, and speech organizational techniques to develop students' speaking abilities, as well as ability to effectively evaluate oral presentations.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational models of communication.
2. Apply elements of Audience Analysis.
3. Demonstrate ethical speaking and listening skills by analyzing presentations for evidence and logic.
4. Research, develop and deliver extemporaneous speeches with effective verbal and nonverbal techniques.
5. Demonstrate effective usage of technology when researching and presenting speeches.
6. Identify how culture, ethnicity and gender influence communication.
7. Develop proficiency in presenting a variety of speeches as an individual or group.

Grading Scale This course will be graded on a point scale. 1000-900 = A 899 - 800 = B
799-700=C 699 - 600 = D
599 or below = F

Speech Presentations: 125 each = 500 points
(speeches: Introduction, informative, persuasive, and group presentation)
Exams: (Midterm, Final)= 200 points
Written Assignments= 300 points

Course Policies
Instructor Policies Late work is not accepted.

All work must be typed using correct grammar and spelling.

Work not following directions provided for each assignment will not be graded and will receive a zero.

To present a speech, you must have a complete typed formal outline and works cited page. Outline and works cited will be part of your speech grade.

Plagiarism, written or oral, will result minimally in the failure of the assignment (1st offense) and failure of the course (2nd offense).

Appropriate dress is expected for speech days. This will be discussed in class.

Late Work Policy:
Students are specifically warned that all assignments must be turned in on or before the due date.
Absolutely no late written assignments or exams will be accepted. Warning, if a student misses
TWO of the major speeches this results in an automatic failure of the course.
You cannot make up the Group Speech.



Attendance:
For evaluated activities such as tests or presentations no absences will be allowed. Excuses will be considered only where
conditions are clearly beyond the student's control and must be documented.

Participation:
Class attendance and participation is strongly encouraged. Attendance will be taken regularly. Your active participation in all class discussions and activities is very important to the success of this course and is expected. I measure class participation based on the following criteria: arriving to class on time; paying attention during short lectures; attentive watching and listening to screenings of films, songs, or other media; respectful listening when I or your peers are speaking; your ability to be fully engaged in your learning without texting, checking your phone or email, or participating in other digital distractions; your ability to stay awake, etc.


It is expected that students will display mature behavior in the classroom. Be responsible for your actions and treat your classmates, instructor and yourself with respect at all times. Failure to do so may result in your removal from the classroom.

I will not discuss your grades over the phone or by email. If you need to discuss your grades, please come to my office or make an appointment to discuss in person.

The instructor will deal with non-compliance of above issues and other situations which may arise on a case-by- case basis.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Attendance is expected and on-time. You are allowed three absences for day section, one absence for evening section. Students are responsible for all information presented in the course regardless of attendance record.

Absences on scheduled presentation dates will result in a zero on the assignment. Late work is not accepted.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
