Course Information
Description A study of major issues in philosophy and/or the work of major philosophical figures in philosophy. Topics in philosophy may include theories of reality, theories of knowledge, theories of value, and their practical applications.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Various OER will be used over the course of the semester. Information will be provided on a module by module basis as determined by course need.  No single OER source textbook will be used.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Read, analyze, and critique philosophical texts.
Demonstrate knowledge of key concepts, major arguments, problems, and terminology in philosophy.
Present logically persuasive arguments both orally and in writing.
Demonstrate critical thinking skills in evaluation and application of philosophical concepts to various aspects
of life.
Evaluate the personal and social responsibilities of living in a diverse world.

1. The student must log onto Blackboard and access the course a minimum of three times per week.

2. Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated.

3. The student is responsible for initiating and completing the drop process. Students who stop coming to class and fail to drop the course will earn an ‘F’ in the course.

4. Belligerent, abusive, profane, threatening, and /or inappropriate behavior on the part of students is a violation of the LIT Student Conduct Regulations. Students who are found guilty of such misconduct may be subject to immediate dismissal from the institution. In addition, these violations of state law may also be subject to criminal action beyond the disciplinary process.

5. Late work will be considered only in the case of a documentable emergency beyond the student’s control. Late/make-up work may be accepted solely at the instructor’s discretion

Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with extended absence from logging in to the course will receive an academic penalty in the form of continual late penalties on submitted work.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
